Texas House Insurance takes up proposal to allow contraceptive coverage for up to 12 months
Bipartisan coalition includes some progressive Democrats and staunchly conservative Republicans
The Texas House Insurance Committee on Tuesday
took up House Bill 916 by Rep. Claudia Ordaz, D-El Paso, allowing
for patients to obtain birth control prescriptions for up to 12 months. Joint
authors include conservative Republicans such as Human Services
Chairman James Frank and Rep. Shelby Slawson as well as Democrats
Reps. Donna Howard and Toni Rose.
Sen. Angela Paxton has filed companion legislation
on the other side of the building.
According to a 2019 study in the published in JAMA
Internal Medicine, a one-year supply was more cost-effective than
refilling every three months.
