SB: In election law debate, short memories in the Texas Senate

Sen. Hughes’ answers are nonresponsive when pressed about how illegal voting was reduced to a misdemeanor in 2021

Given that the Texas Senate on Tuesday voted to boost the penalties for illegal voting up to a felony offense and a pressure campaign is already underway to urge the Texas House to follow suit, it’s worth remembering the way things played out when it was reduced to a misdemeanor in 2021.

The story goes that as the Senate was in the midst of the final vote to approve the conference committee report on Senate Bill 1, the sweeping and hard-fought elections bill, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick on the dais spoke via cell phone to former President Donald John Trump to let 45 know that a conservative victory was playing out at the Texas Capitol.
