Senate considers $1.4 billion hit to replace lost property taxes, post-Harvey

The cost to make Harvey school districts whole should between $862 million and $1.36 billion; those numbers will become clearer between next spring and summer – right in the heart of the next legislative session

Texas Senate Finance appears ready to consider a $1.4 billion one-time boost in the next session to replace school district taxes on property diminished or lost during Hurricane Harvey.

A dozen school districts already have reappraised property in the wake of the monster storm, a move that’s cost the state about $150 million.

This morning, senators appeared ready to put all school districts impacted by Harvey under that umbrella, even if only for two years.
