School finance proposal redirects $5.3 billion in current ed funding to academic goals

Sen. West: “I don’t want the headline to be that we have repealed programs….I want people to know that we are trying to put more money into the basic allotment to help us deal with the issue of recapture.”

A work group has voted on recommendations to send to the Public School Finance Commission, reallocating $5.3 billion in current revenue to target strategies that improve academic outcomes in the classroom.

Chair Rep. Dan Huberty, R-Houston, stressed the expenditures working group wanted to both reallocate money and provide additional revenue for public schools. Today’s discussion, however, focused primarily on reallocating current money rather than finding new revenue.
